For more than five centuries, the known lands have lived beneath the shadow of ancient kingdoms, forgotten prophecies and endless violence. At the heart of this brutal world stands Khar'Mud, a colossal tribal city of mud, black timber and the bones of enormous creatures from another age. Its towering walls protect crowded markets, mercenaries, hunters and outcasts from the horrors beyond—but inside those walls, survival comes at a price. For over 500 years, King Mordrak has ruled through fear. His soldiers enforce his will, his bounty system turns men against one another, and those who cannot pay the King's tribute quickly learn what resistance costs. Beyond the cities lies an even older world. Dead forests disappear beneath endless mist. Black mountains rise above forgotten roads. Ancient bridges cross bottomless ravines, while beasts and creatures forgotten by civilization roam territories where few humans dare to travel. Hidden among these wastelands are ruins, sacred places and beings who remember a world that existed long before Mordrak's reign. And buried beneath centuries of blood is an ancient prophecy. A prophecy Mordrak has spent generations trying to prevent. Now, somewhere in this dying world, a young girl named Nara has appeared. And for the first time in five hundred years, the King is afraid.
