THE KEEPERS: Rise of the First Flame
The world ended a long time ago. Nobody agrees on how.
What's left is dust and salvage — settlements welded together from the hulls of dead ships, a currency called crouds, and a ruling power called the Ascendancy that decides who eats and who doesn't. Humans share it with the species who arrived after the fall. Nobody's a native here anymore.
Beneath the settlements, in the gutted hull of something that used to fly, three thousand people gather to watch fighters kill each other for money. It's the only place a scavenger can earn in one night what a season of digging won't pay.
Kaelan fights there. He has two daughters, a mother who worries, and a debt he can't explain to anyone. He also has a pendant she gave him and told him never to take off.
The Keepers were hunted to almost nothing before he was born. The Ascendancy was thorough. But it missed something, and now it's burning in a cage in front of a crowd — and somewhere in that crowd, someone is already reporting it back.
