Story
THE RIFT
In a small border town, an ordinary day is abruptly interrupted when a huge crack appears without warning in the middle of the main street. There is no earthquake, no explanation, nothing to point to. The town does what small towns do: observe, discuss, and, within a few days, begins to look away.
At night, everything changes. A dense red fog thickens, and something emerges from the ground. No one knows the name of what they are seeing. They only know one thing for sure: the crack disappears when someone dies.
A horse groom, a preacher carrying more guilt than faith, a sheriff who needs to decide who will be next, a doctor who knows more than he is willing to reveal, and a woman who leads without ever raising her voice—each of them is dragged into the same impossible arithmetic. What begins as an accident becomes a rule. What becomes a rule becomes law. And what becomes law begins to decide who deserves to be saved.
Some try to leave. The desert always makes them return.
THE RIFT is a story about what a city chooses to become when it runs out of easy answers — and how far people are willing to go to convince themselves that what they are doing is necessary.
