What outpainting does
It grows the picture, it does not stretch it
Only ever adds
Reaching a new ratio by cropping would throw away part of the picture. This does the opposite: the original stays untouched at its full size, and the shorter side is padded until the frame is the shape you asked for.
Continues the scene
The model reads the lighting, texture and perspective at the edge and carries them outward, so the new area belongs to the same photograph rather than sitting beside it.
Up to 4096px per side
That is the ceiling on each of the four sides, so a picture can grow by more than its own width in a single run. Very large expansions are also where a model has the least to work from, so several smaller steps often read better than one enormous one.

AI image extender FAQ
- What is an AI image extender?
- It is a tool that generates new picture outside the edges of an existing photo — often called outpainting or uncropping. Instead of cutting the image down to a new shape, it invents the part of the scene that was never in the frame, matching what is already there.
- How far can an image be expanded?
- Up to 4096 pixels on each of the four sides in a single run, so a picture can more than double in either direction. The further you go the less the model has to reason from, so a very large expansion is usually better done as two smaller ones.
- Is this the same as upscaling?
- No, and it is the most common mix-up in this field. Upscaling adds pixels inside the picture you already have, making the same image larger and sharper. Extending adds picture around it — new area that was not photographed. If your image is small rather than tightly cropped, use the image upscaler instead.
- Does it change the original part of the photo?
- No. The area you uploaded is preserved at full size and full detail; only the new margin around it is generated. That is also why the result is always at least as large as the file you started with.
- Which aspect ratios can I expand to?
- 16:9, 1:1, 9:16 and 4:3, plus a zoom-out option that keeps the original proportions and simply adds room on all four sides. A shape your image already has is greyed out, because expanding to it would add nothing.
- Which file formats work?
- JPG, PNG and WebP. Transparency is not preserved — outpainting fills the new area with generated picture, so the result is an opaque image.
- What happens to the image I upload?
- It is uploaded to your own YouArt account so the run can read it, and the result opens in a session only you can see. Nothing is published anywhere unless you share it yourself.
