How to convert a video to GIF

  1. Open your video

Choose or drop an MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV file. It opens in your browser without an upload or an account.

  2. Choose the clip and settings

Drag the handles to the moment you want, up to 30 seconds. Set the frame rate, width and whether the GIF loops.

  3. Convert and download

Create the GIF, check it in the preview, then download it. Your original video stays unchanged.

GIF is a long-established image format that almost every chat app, website and email client can show. It stores every frame as a separate picture with up to 256 colors, so a GIF is usually much larger than the same clip saved as a video. Short, small clips work best.

Keep the file small

Clip length, frame rate and width all add to the file size. A 3–5 second clip at 480 px and 15 fps suits most chats and posts. If the GIF is too large for where you're sharing it, shorten the clip or reduce the width first.

Choose a frame rate

15 fps is smooth enough for most movement. Use 20 fps for fast action, or 10 fps for slow scenes and the smallest files.

Colors and quality

Each frame is reduced to its own palette of up to 256 colors. Flat graphics, screen recordings and cartoons convert cleanly. Smooth gradients such as skies may show visible color bands, and very detailed footage can look grainy.

Supported videos

Open MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM or MKV files up to 500 MB. Whether a file opens depends on the video format inside it and on your browser; protected or encrypted videos can't be converted. GIFs have no sound, so audio is not included.
