Fantasy maps

DnD Map Generator: Fantasy World Maps From a Description

Describe a place and get a chart of it. Mountains are stippled by hand, forests read as clusters of small trees, rivers taper as they run to the sea, and the whole thing sits on aged parchment with a compass rose and a banner carrying the name. Kingdoms, coastlines, walled cities and dungeon levels all work.

8 credits
One prompt, one chart. The names are the ones the prompt asked for.

Four Kinds of Map: A Continent, A City, An Island Chain and A Dungeon Level

  • Continent - three kingdoms on one landmass
  • City - a walled capital drawn street by street
  • Islands - a scattered archipelago off a mainland coast
  • Dungeon - one level cut into the rock

How it works

How the DnD Map Generator Works, in Three Steps

  1. Step 1

    Describe the place

Say what kind of map it is and what is on it - a coastline, a mountain range, a walled city, a flooded hall. Write the names you want in capitals and they are drawn as given.

  2. Step 2

    Generate the chart

One run draws the whole map: terrain, coastline, compass rose and the ribbon banner carrying the name. 8 credits, about ten seconds.

  3. Step 3

    Download and use it

A 1024 by 1024 image you can drop into a session document, print as a handout, or drag onto a virtual tabletop as a background picture.

What it does

A Chart, Not a Sketch

It writes the names on

Name a realm, a range, a river or a district in your prompt and it is lettered onto the map in a serif hand, placed clear of the linework. Plain names come out cleanest; see the FAQ on how far to trust the lettering.

Four scales, one page

A whole continent, a single kingdom, a walled city drawn street by street, or one dungeon level cut into rock. The drawing changes to suit - a dungeon gets hatched stone to the edges, not countryside.

Finished, not a fragment

Every run returns one complete chart filling the frame: aged parchment, a compass rose, a named banner, and a sea creature or a ship where there is actually open water.

Prompt ideas

Three Prompts to Start From

Name the places in capitals and say where each one sits. Short plain names are drawn most reliably; long hyphenated ones are the hardest for any image model to letter correctly.

A kingdom

A coastal kingdom of pine forest and a central mountain range, a walled city at a river mouth, a banner reading THE KINGDOM OF ARDEN, the mountains THE DRAKE SPINE and the water THE GREY SEA.

A walled city

A walled city as a top down district plan with a river through it and a harbour, named THE FREE CITY OF KARRADH, with districts THE GILT QUARTER, LOW MARKET, TEMPLE ROW and THE DROWNED WARD.

A dungeon level

A single dungeon level cut into solid rock with hatched stone to every edge, a stair at one end and a flooded hall at the other, named THE TOMB OF VARN.

What people use it for

Where a Map Earns Its Place

Session prep

Draw the region the party is crossing this week, or the level they are about to descend into, instead of describing it twice and drawing it on a whiteboard.

Handouts

A chart a player character would plausibly be carrying. Print it, crease it, and hand it across the table as a found object.

Worldbuilding

Fix a setting on paper before it drifts. Once the coastline and the names exist as a picture, everyone at the table remembers the same geography.

Print and props

A 1024 pixel square prints cleanly at postcard size for a handout, or larger if you are happy with a soft, aged look.

FAQ

Questions About the DnD Map Generator

What does this page make?
One original hand-drawn map from a written description, styled as an antique parchment chart: ink linework, hand-stippled relief, restrained colour washes, a compass rose and a ribbon banner carrying the name. It draws kingdoms, continents, coastlines and island chains, walled cities as district plans, and single dungeon levels cut into rock.
Is it a VTT-ready battle map with a grid?
No, and it is better to know that up front. What you get is a picture of a map, not a virtual tabletop file: there is no .dd2vtt export, no guaranteed squares-per-inch grid pitch, and no scene data for Roll20, Foundry or Fantasy Grounds. You can drop the image onto a tabletop as a background and lay that software's own grid over it, but the alignment is yours to set, not ours to promise.
Will the place names be spelled correctly?
Usually, and the page is designed around it - names are asked for in the drawing instruction and lettered in a serif hand clear of the linework. But the lettering is drawn by an image model, not typeset, so it is not guaranteed. In our own testing 33 of 34 requested names came out correct; the one that failed was a long hyphenated name, which came back broken across the map. Short plain names in capitals are the most reliable, and a name written twice in two places happens occasionally on busy maps.
Can I map a published setting like the Forgotten Realms?
No. The generator will not reproduce an existing published setting, adventure, module or copyrighted map, so asking for a named commercial world returns an original place instead. Describe your own geography and it will draw that - the names you invent are drawn exactly as you write them.
How many credits does one map cost?
8 credits for one map at 1K, whichever kind you ask for. A re-roll with a different coastline or a different set of names costs the same 8 credits again.
