For anything on the nose, a front-on or three-quarter shot. For anything on the ear, turn your head and tuck your hair back — jewellery can only be put through cartilage the photo actually shows. What the filter does
Each piece is placed with a believable entry point, the skin or cartilage sitting against the metal instead of the jewellery hovering on the surface. The metal picks up whatever light is already in your photo and drops a small contact shadow where it touches — the two details that separate a piercing from a sticker, and the first things that look wrong when a filter fakes it.
A septum ring passes through the columella rather than the tip of the nose. A helix or flat sits in the upper cartilage rim, a lobe stud goes through the fleshy lobe, an industrial bar spans two cartilage points instead of one, and a nostril stud sits in the side of the nose. Name the placement and the anatomy follows it, which is what makes the picture legible to someone who does this for a living.
